Formerly known as Amadeus Waterways (name shortened in 2008), AmaWaterways was founded in 2002 by a few cruise industry executives that had worked for Uniworld and Viking River Cruises. By 2006, the US-based company started building new river cruise vessels. Today the cruise line has 13 vessels with two more expected for 2013.

Their ships are designed for the English-speaking market, thus their passengers tend to be from North America, Europe and Australia. AmaWaterways provides a premium river cruising product that features luxurious accommodations and numerous complimentary amenities. Itineraries encompass Europe, Russia, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Africa.

The crew and officers’ nationality is mostly European with a couple of their vessels recruiting from the region where the ship is based. For example, AmaLotus hires mostly Vietnamese crew. All AmaWaterways crew speak English.
